All signed up (Jennifer)

I have been talking about possibly wanting to do a 5k run.  There is one in October that I would like to do.  By then the weather should be much cooler.  But it seems so far away.  I have completed runs of 3 to 5 miles at home on my own.  So then I thought maybe I would do one at the end of August in my hometown where my parents live.  I have been tossing it around in my head because maybe it would too hot that day, or maybe it would rain, or maybe....you get the point.  Excuses.  Last night I decided I really do want to do this. I offered my friend Ron to do it with me and my hubby was going to but now has to work.  This seems to be a MUCH smaller scale one than in October which is the Komen run where the turnout will be huge.  From what I can see there were only 350 people at this same run last year.   I decided it is time.  I want to commit to this.  So I did.  Regardless of who goes with me, what the weather is, or what my horoscope is for that day(that was a joke) I am going to do it...FOR ME.  So thats it.  I am signed up for next Saturday.  After signing up for it I saw it was called a 5k "race".  I did see where walkers are welcome, but I would like to run the whole thing.  My run is probably considered a slow one, but hey...its what I can do.  The word "race" is very intimidating to me.  I told Trish that I am doing it and she wrote back that she will come to the "race".  Just seeing the word makes me nervous.  I am not a big fan of competition.  It just isnt my thing.  I am doing this for me...not to compete with anyone.  So, at this point I have feelings of excitement and nervousness at the same time.

Tips?  Thoughts?  Advice?  Any words of wisdom for the week before my run will be appreciated!  I really dont know what to expect.

Yay! I am so excited for you. I run/walk 5K's around my neighborhood all the time but being at a "race" is so much more fun. Don't worry that it is a "race", I think most people are really just racing against their own PR and not trying to outdo on another.
You are smart to do a smaller race as opposed to the race for the cure. At the Race for the cure it is dead locked at the beginning of the race and I had to walk across the finish line because it was jam packed there as well. It is for a good cause though, so I recommend doing it anyway. But for your first one, I think smaller is better.
When I do 5K's I usually alternate running/walking throughout the week with the day before the race being a walk only day to save my legs for the next day. Good luck! I can't wait to hear all about it.

I did my first "race" last year (have done 2 more now) and my best advise... don't worry about what anyone else is doing! I got all this advice about passing people, keeping someone in your sights, etc. My goal: to run the whole thing if possible and be proud of my accomplishment! Make sure you eat something (I have a hard time, my stomach is all nasty with nerves) and get in your water!

Happy running!

I'm excited for you. We did the Hot Dog Trot last summer that benefitted a local dog rescue facility and the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. I try and beat whatever time I did previously (which is pretty slow).

Yey for you! You go girl! LOL. You will have to let me know how it goes. That is so great that you are doing it for you! Awesome! Usually there is water along the way to grab as you run by, so try to do that. Then after, make sure you drinks tons. Oh and walk around after you are done, dont sit or your muscles can tighten. Good Luck to you!!!! :)

How awesomely courageous and adventurous of you! Super cool. You are "racing" the "old Jen" and you will kick her butt!! I think it's a terrific thing to do. Let nothing hold you back!

Just tell yourself that you're really racing agains yourself. That's what I did and continue to do so. You can do this.
